Louisiana State University beat Ohio State 38-24 to win the national championship. They had a wild run to the championships. They lost twice in three overtimes, and took many fourth-down risks.  In the season there was no team that was on the top position for very long. In the end however Louisiana State University played brilliantly on the day it had to.

President Bush honored the team on Monday and lauded the success of the team in the championships. Some of the best contributors of the team were quarterback Matt Flynn and defensive standout Glenn Dorsey. Les Miles, the coach of the team was praised by bush as a strong leader and a risk taker. The football team became two time champions for the first time in the history of Bowl Championship series. They were also the first to be defeated in two games in the championship season. LSU had fallen behind 10-0 but scored 31 unanswered points to bag the championship.

The University of Alabama gets three five-star recruits this year, namely, wide receiver Julio Jones, offensive lineman Tyler Love, and four-star quarterback Star Jackson from Lake Worth. All in all, Alabama signed up a total of 32 recruits this year, making the Crimson Tide the number one recruiting class. In 2007, Alabama made a 7-6 record including an Independence Bowl victory over Colorado.

Notre Dame got 23 recruits, ranking as the second top recruiting class in the nation, and got Michael Floyd from Minnesota, quarterback Dayne Crist from California, and Kyle Rudolph from Cincinnati. The third rank was taken by Florida, which took in 22 new players. These included Omar Hunter, Matt Patchan, and Carl Moore.

Oklahoma and Miami-Florida both ranked number five, with the Hurricanes getting 33 commitments including two five-stars and 15 four-stars. Twelve were from Miami and there were almost 20 from south Florida. Twenty-one recruits were signed up for the Sooners, among who was five-star R.J. Washington from Texas as defensive end. Leaving the top 10 this year are USC, Florida State, Georgia, and Michigan. USC went down from third place in 2007. On the eleventh place is BCS National Champion LSU, which had two five-stars and eleven four-stars.

Surprisingly, there was someone who did not sign with anyone — Terrelle Pryor from Jeannette Senior High School. He himself declared it, even if big ten schools from Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Oregon are after him.

No bench for Mallett

Ryan Mallett just transferred from Michigan to Arkansas. He would normally have to sit out a year before he could play on the football team there. Arkansas is trying to get special permission for him to start playing and not have to wait the year. It is definitely going to go through, the paperwork just needs to be filed.

At six feet seven, Mallett was the leader for the Wolverines last season. However, he decided to leave when Coach Lloyd Carr decided to retire from Michigan. He had seven touchdown passes and intercepted five balls.

He has a great arm and great strength behind the arm. His size alone would lead you to think he is a force coming at you. He does need some foot work, but for the most part he can hold the ball under pressure until an opportune moment comes to pass it to another or throw it down field to another receiver. His size lets him shake off most of the guys who would pull him down for a tackle. He is the perfect candidate for Arkansas’ quarterback.

If you can catch him in a game, you should try to see him at least once. He has great timing and an impeccable throw. He can blast them out of the arena if necessary. But he is good in the short as well as long throws.

In 1905, it was clear that an organization was needed to support football and the sport it was to become. With all the rough play, there needed to be a more structured organization to watch over things. This is where the National Collegiate Athletic Association or NCAA came into play. President Roosevelt invited some of the top college athletes to visit with him in two separate conferences in the late part of 1905. In the last meeting on December 28th, IAAUS was founded. It contained 62 individuals it looked upon as members. Today the NCAA is active in the role of moving legislation into a better position to serve issues in athletics, combine forces with other institutions to form a better unified team play, help those who are not financially able to provide the right type of athletics to the community, work together to decipher the rules of many team sports to keep things on an even keel, and much more. The NCAA serves to bring sports to young people who may be the next great talent. It serves to reason that without the NCAA in place, sporting events like football may not have become a national past time.
