Eighty-three year old head coach Joe Paterno’s Penn State Nittany Lions could have a great year this coming season if they fix a few problems on their team. The biggest mystery heading into the fall will be who of PSU’s three underclassmen will be the signal caller for their opener against Youngstown State. The coaching staff have made it known that after disappointing performance by all three QBs will be pushed hard this summer until one of them wins the position. Running the ball should come a lot easier for the Nittany Lions with 1,000-yard-rusher Evan Royster returning for his senior year. On defense, Penn State will have to replace their two leading tacklers Josh Hull and Navaro Bowman, both be plying their trade on Sundays in the NFL next season. Their schedule looks favorable this season, with only Iowa and Ohio State being there only away games that they could be considered underdogs in. Joe Pa would love another  Big Ten title after just losing out to OSU last year.

It may be a little early to start thinking about the NCAA Rose Bowl, or any other bowl game for that matter, especially since the state of the BCS rankings is in such bedlam. This weekend is going to carry huge bowl game implications with teams like Florida and Oklahoma needing wins to state their case for the BCS bowl game bid. However, it looks like it may be USC and Penn State that get to meet each other in the Rose Bowl game this year. That’s good news, as USC needs some competition in that Bowl game after winning it very easily for 6 years in a row. If you’re a fan of either team, you may want to consider looking for your Rose Bowl tickets now.

Penn State is Rosy

Though they dropped a crucial game against the heavy underdog Hawkeyes of Iowa, Penn State must not let their focus completely drop off. They may have lost the BCS bowl game opportunity but their chances of playing in the Rose Bowl are extremely strong. All they need to do is finish strong against Indiana and Michigan state and the bid is theirs. Ncaafootball.com has the whole story.

This weekend will be the Penn State Nittany Lions’ last road game in which they will take on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Though both teams play the game in a similar fashion (run the ball, rely on defense, control the clock), the Nittany Lions have done it better than anyone else this year en route to their current 9-0 record. A record that has propelled them to the number three spot in the polls and one of the premiere college teams in the nation. So if the Lions are able to roll through the Hawkeyes as many predict, they’ll be able to enjoy home field advantage through the rest of the season and may just find themselves in the big BCS bowl game. Big Big-10 Showdown

 pennstatefootball.jpg

Although the Big-10 Conference lacks a championship game, you may as well consider this Saturday’s Penn State at Ohio State football game to be just that. Penn State (8-0) versus Ohio State (7-1) will showcase the two best squads in Big-10 play this year and will go a long way as to determining which team plays in which bowl game. Ohio State wants to move past their loss weeks ago to the USC Trojans and reclimb the slippery BCS rankings poll while Penn State is searching to hold on to their number 3 ranking at worst, and move up to number 1 at best. It will be a knock down, drag out battle and you can preview the action at ncaafootball.com.

The two Penn State University NCAA football players’ defensive tackle Phil Taylor and linebacker Navorro Bowman pleaded guilty on Friday for the campus fight charges that were levied upon them last year. The Center County Judge Bradley after hearing the arguments sentenced the players for one year probation and 100 hours of community service. Both the players were sent out off the team following the campus fight and there has been no decision made yet off their status in the team. Both the players have expressed their willingness to put this behind them and start playing football again. The Penn State fans will be rushing to get their tickets to witness these players play during the forthcoming NCAA football season.

Sean Lee, senior linebacker with Penn State, tore his ACL in the right knee during a recent practice, and this might render him unable to give top notch performance for the entire 2008 season.

Over the next several weeks, Lee is expected to undergo treatment and consecutive surgery on the knee, sources say. Director of Athletic Medicine for Penn State, Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli, confirmed this and added that he will also use up a total of nine precious months forgoing practice in order to undergo an intense rehabilitation program. This is to ensure complete recovery for his knee.

Lee was quoted as saying “I have a responsibility to the team to help do everything I can this year in what might be a non-conventional way,” He added that he was sorry that this unforeseen circumstance happened but he will do everything he can to recuperate and ensure that he performs better upon recovery.

So pleased is Penn State with 81 year old Joe Paterno’s performance that they both agree that the football coach does not require a new contract to continue what he does best at Penn State.

Currently, Paterno’s contract ends at the end of the 2008 season but that does not mark the end to his career with the Nittany Lions. Graham Spanier, the University president was quoted as saying that Paterno’s  seniority is more than enough to convince them that he needs no mere contract to stay on with Penn State. He entered his 43rd season as Penn State’s coach and has brought many victories to the Nittany Lions.

Joe Paterno was quoted as saying that he will be comfortable with whatever decision the University came up with and will continue to be the guiding light for the Nittany Lions.
