In 1905, it was clear that an organization was needed to support football and the sport it was to become. With all the rough play, there needed to be a more structured organization to watch over things. This is where the National Collegiate Athletic Association or NCAA came into play. President Roosevelt invited some of the top college athletes to visit with him in two separate conferences in the late part of 1905. In the last meeting on December 28th, IAAUS was founded. It contained 62 individuals it looked upon as members. Today the NCAA is active in the role of moving legislation into a better position to serve issues in athletics, combine forces with other institutions to form a better unified team play, help those who are not financially able to provide the right type of athletics to the community, work together to decipher the rules of many team sports to keep things on an even keel, and much more. The NCAA serves to bring sports to young people who may be the next great talent. It serves to reason that without the NCAA in place, sporting events like football may not have become a national past time.
